Air Show Celebrates Another Successful Weekend
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — August 29, 2007 — Expectations for the 2007 Indianapolis Air Show were sky high. After all, it’s difficult to top yourself year after year, when you’re already considered one of the best air shows in the country.
Fortunately, the performers and volunteers for last weekend’s event at Mt. Comfort Airport were up to the challenge.
Spectators turned out in droves for the 11th annual Air Show, with Sunday’s attendance setting a one-day record of approximately 70,000. The U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels wowed the crowds; the Army — with its Virtual Army Experience and Sky Soldiers — provided highlights both on the ground and in the air; Red Bull’s pilots and skydivers took their performances to crazy heights; Lucas Oil’s Mike Wiskus blazed through the air, in a haze of smoke and noise; and, Team Oracle proved why they are one of the most sought-after aerobatic acts in the world.
“This was an incredible show, and Sunday, in particular, was just fantastic. We’re grateful that so many people thought we put together an entertaining weekend,” said Mike Potter, chairman of this year’s festivities. “From top to bottom, everyone had a role in making the 2007 show a success.
“Special thanks go to Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, which presented the Air Show and supplied too many volunteers to count,” Potter said. “And, our sponsors – Miller Lite, Leinenkugel’s, Marsh and United Package Liquors – have been tremendous. This was a total team effort, and we’re all proud that our hard work will once again benefit some folks who are deserving of our assistance and attention.”
Net proceeds from the Air Show go to the Central Indiana Community Foundation. CICF provides funding to worthy non-profit organizations throughout the area.
Potter noted that an incident Saturday involving the “Tiger Tank” exhibit, where two military re-enactors suffered non-life threatening injuries, is being reviewed by the event’s executive committee to determine what changes in policy, if any, regarding pyrotechnic displays and simulated fire need to be addressed.
“Spectator safety is our top priority,” Potter said. “While our staff handled the situation quickly and appropriately, we will always be looking for ways to improve.”
Final attendance figures and totals for the CICF donation will be available later this year. Plans for the 2008 Indianapolis Air Show, Aug. 23 and 24, are already underway. Check the event’s Website, http://www.indyairshow.com/, for updates.
